The current Q5 is one of the oldest cars in Audi’s current car roster and it should be replaced with the 2017 Audi Q5 in the near future. In fact, Audi stated that the next generation Q5 will be out by the end of this year and it will be available for sale starting with the first half of 2016. Unlike the current car, the next model will use an all new platform which will also underpin the next generation A4 as well as the new Q7. This new MLB II platform will make use of new materials as well as more aluminum, so the Q5 should lose at least 500 pounds. In fact, we expect it to weigh at around 3,500 pounds which is quite good for a mid-size crossover.
2017 Audi Q5 Review
Just like before, despite the fact the platform is a front wheel drive design, the Q5 will only be offered with the quattro all wheel drive system but this time it will be tuned in order to offer a nearly perfect balance, so it should not suffer from the usual understeer of the old model. The price will likely start around $35,000 in the US for the base version and it will go to as far as $70,000 while in Europe it should start at the equivalent of around $40,000.
2017 Audi Q5 Interior
The new 2017 Audi Q5 will get an all new interior with more equipment as well as more refined materials. In fact, we should see a very similar design inside its cabin to that of the new generation A4 with a similar dashboard and a similar equipment level. The dashboard will be made out of really soft materials while the center console as well as the door panels will get aluminum, wood or even carbon fiber inserts. The top end models will also get better sport seats as well as an S-line steering wheel.
On the outside the design will be very similar to that of the new generation of the Q7 and it will borrow a lot of the design of the Prologue concept car. The grille will be more angular while the headlights will be slimmer and wider. At the back there will be more of the same while from the profile the Q5 will be lower as well as slightly longer than the previous version.
2017 Audi Q5 Engine
Engine wise, the 2017 Audi Q5 will get both new and old engines as well as a standard 7 speed dual-clutch automatic and no manual option for the US market. The base engine is going to be a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 good for more than 250 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Further up the range there is going to be a 3 liter V6 in both supercharged and turbocharged forms. In the SQ5 the engine will be supercharged and it should make around 350 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque while in the RSQ5 it will get a twin-turbo system which should raise the power to as much as 470 horsepower and well over 420 lb-ft of torque. In any case the top speed will be limited to 155 MPH while the 0 to 60 MPH time will be around 5 seconds for the S model and around 4 seconds for the RS model, thus becoming one of the fastest crossovers on the market.
The only diesel that will come on the US market is going to be on the RSQ5 Diesel model which will feature a triple-turbo 3 liter V6 which could provide as much as 400 horsepower and well over 600 lb-ft of torque. This will gets its own 8 speed gearbox that will be able to handle all that torque. In performance it will be similar to the SQ5 petrol powered model but it will offer better fuel consumption than that model.
