BMW impressed a lot of people with the previous 135M and those people now want a successor. However, the 235M is not nearly up to the task of being as good as the previous generation and in order to give the 2 Series a boost in sales and performance, they are going to release the 2017 BMW M2, a fully fledged sports car which may finally have what it takes to be a better driver’s car than the M4. In fact, many people think that this might finally be the successor to the E46 M3 everyone was expecting.
The car will use the same platform and even the same engine as the 235i M. However, the M Division has been given the task to make it more interesting as well as more fun to drive so they are going to replace the entire running gear. Many think that it will get the same running gear as the M3 sedan with a bigger rear differential and bigger brakes all around the car. The M2 is expected to be released in the second half of 2016 and it should be priced at around $50,000 which is the current sweet-spot for high performance coupe cars.
2017 BMW M2 Engine
Engine wise, the 2017 BMW M2 will in fact use the N55 engine from the 235i rather than the S55 which equips the M3. However, instead of putting out no more than 300 horsepower, the N55 will be given a treatment and it should receive a new cylinder head, exhaust and even intake system in order to raise its power to around 365 horsepower and 343 lb-ft of torque, more than enough to become a really appreciated sports car. There is also going to be an overboost function which will add another 25 lb-ft of torque for short amounts of time in order to give it better acceleration during overtakes. Unlike the M4 though, the M2 will only be available with a 6 speed manual gearbox and a limited slip differential which is all a driver’s car needs.
Exterior And Interior
The outside will be based on that of the 235i M but the 2017 BMW M2 will be wider and lower than it. In fact, the car will receive a new body kit and bigger wheels as well as new high performance tires. In the back there is going to be a small spoiler as well as a diffuser while the front bumper will also incorporate a splitter in order to help it during high speed cornering. Inside the cabin the M2 will be mostly identical to the 235i M with a few differences such as all new Recaro seats and colored seat-belts.
