BMW is well known for making very good cars, most of them being near perfect to drive. Unfortunately though, their only real super-car is the i8 which is not nearly as fast as it should. In order to be relevant on the high performance car market BMW is expected to release the first super-car in more than 30 years. The 2017 BMW M9 will be the iconic successor to the legendary M1 which is one of the most impressive BMW cars ever made.
2017 BMW M9 Release Date And Price
In order to live up to the expectations, the 2017 BMW M9 will share its platform with the i8 which means it will get a carbon fiber tub and a really lightweight suspension system. However, the actual exterior design as well as the interior or its engines are going to be unique to it. The price is still unknown but some say it will cost at least $150,000 which would still be great considering it will boast a carbon fiber chassis. The release date for the concept car will likely be at the end of 2016 while the production model will not hit the market until the end of 2017.
BMW M9 Engine
Engine wise, instead of the tiny 3 cylinder petrol engine of the i8, the M9 will offer a lot more raw power. Many expect the car to remain a hybrid but there are now some rumors which suggest that the M9 will go on a different route. The car should receive a newly developed twin-turbocharged inline 6 which could displace between 3 and 3.6 liters. This new engine will develop up to 600 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque which will be enough, especially with the lightweight construction, to be a competitive car in its class. A higher power hybrid with up to 800 horsepower could also be offered at a later date. Also, unlike with most other cars in its class, the M9 will be rear wheel drive only and it will send all of that power through a specifically designed 7 speed gearbox.
BMW M9 Concept Exterior Design
Just as we said, the design of the 2017 BMW M9 will be quite a bit more different than that of the i8. The car will not feature the fluid lines but it will rather get a more aggressive design with larger aerodynamic bits and it might even get design cues from the original M1.
2017 BMW M9 Interior
Inside the cabin we expect to see two seats only which is the norm for any super-car these days. However, the 2017 BMW M9 will likely be better equipped than most with the usual 12 inch iDrive system or Recaro Sportster CS seats being offered even on the base trim level.
