Sonic is most likely at the bottom of pretty much everyone’s thoughts when people mention Chevy, but subcompact car does have plenty of strengths of its own. It replaces Aveo, which wasn’t that prolific. Neither is Sonic, to be honest, but it is much better executed car. 2017 Chevrolet Sonic EV should be changed a lot thanks to incoming mid-cycle refresh.
2017 Chevrolet Sonic EV Review
Sonic, currently offers couple of engines under its hood which is a nice thing to have from B-segment car. Base 1.8L 4-cylinder unit is capable of making 138 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque, while optional 1.4L turbocharged four adds 23 lb-ft of torque to already impressive numbers for a subcompact. Of course, power output remains unchanged. Every model is offered with natural front-wheel drive, while transmission options differ. While base engine offers a choice between 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox, turbo unit comes with standard 6-speed manual shift stick. However, top grade models with turbo four can get 6-speed automatic as well.
2017 Chevrolet Sonic EV will, like current models, be available in couple of body styles; as sedan and a hatchback. This is one of its main advantages, together with plenty of options in powertrain and transmission departments. However, new model will be refreshed and should feature more upright frontal fascia which is supposed to take more angular approach. Headlamps are bound to be trimmed down, and grille, together with bumper, will have to follow in their footsteps. Rear end should also get new tail-lights which are identical in both sedans and hatches, but their respective behinds, otherwise differ.
2017 Chevrolet Sonic EV Interior
Cabin is nicely executed for Sonic’s class. Apart from design tweaks, you can expect some minor changes in building material, but don’t get your hopes high. Apart from soft and hard plastics, dashboard and door panels won’t offer much more. Seats, though, can be of higher quality. Since there are four trim levels to browse between, you can get perforated leatherette (LTZ) or leather seats with sueded microfiber inserts (RS). No less than 10 airbags have been fitted into this B-segment car, and advanced safety features aren’t that bad either. They consist of blind spot monitors, lane departure warning and forward collision alert.
2017 Chevrolet Sonic EV Price
You can easily manage 33 mpg combined with turbo four engine and manual transmission, while automatic lowers the numbers to 31 or even 28 mpg combined in sporty RS models. Base engine is rated at 30 mpg combined with manual and at 28 mpg combined with automatic. Prices between $14,250 for LS sedan and $22,000 for RS hatchback shouldn’t budge.
2017 Chevrolet Sonic EV is a fine-looking, nicely executed affordable subcompact car with couple of body styles, couple of engine options and three transmission choices. Even larger cars don’t offer that many choices, not to mention superb safety equipment.
