Back in June, GMC filled a trademark request for the name Granite which is a bit unusual for the American truck manufacturer. However, not too long after that it became clear that GMC will very likely launch a production version of the Granite Concept which has been released back in 2010. Unfortunately, at this point in time there is not that much information about the upcoming 2017 GMC Granite but it seems that GMC is going to use the same Gamma II platform as that on the Encore.
2017 GMC Granite Price
This would certainly limit what GMC can do with a crossover, but if the production car will have anything in common with the concept vehicle then it is quite clear that we have a winner on our hands. The car should be ready for sale by the end of 2016 while the production form could be unveiled later this year. The price should hover around $20,000 for the base model while a fully equipped version is unlikely to go past $35,000.
2017 GMC Granite Engine
While it will not be a rear wheel drive platform, the 2017 GMC Granite is likely going to be offered with four wheel drive as standard which would make it one of the only alternatives for the Subaru Forester. Engine wise, the car is likely going to make use of GM’s newest inline 4 units which range from 1.5 liter for the smallest one, all the way up to 2 liters for the top of the range model. The base Granite could offer up to 160 horsepower and around 160 lb-ft of torque which is more than enough for a commuter vehicle while the top of the range model could make use of a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 with up to 300 horsepower, car which will be able to compete with the upcoming Jeep Renegade Trackhawk. All models are likely going to make use of the new 9 speed automatic which GM co-developed with Ford for quite some time.
Design of Exterior And Interior
The design is probably this car’s biggest selling point because it just looks unique. However, the production model will slightly differ from the concept car in order to be easier and cheaper to manufacture. The front end with its massive grille, large side air intakes and slim LED headlights are likely going to be kept but the base model will feature 16 or 17 inch rims. The back end on the other hand could be carried over pretty much completely while the rear suicide doors will likely be replaced with normal doors. Inside the cabin, the 2017 GMC Granite should be quite similar to the Canyon when it comes to the general design but the materials used here are very likely going to be of a better quality.
