The Prius is the best selling hybrid car in the World having sold more units than most other manufacturers combined. That’s because the car is very cheap to buy and use as well as very comfortable and quite fun to drive despite the fact it is nothing more than a hybrid. However, the current model is old now and in order to stay ahead of the competition a new model is going to be released by the Japanese manufacturer. The 2017 Toyota Prius is going to be an all new car which will make use of a new engine, design and platform.
In fact, this is the first car to use Toyota’s all new modular platform which will also underpin the next generation RAV4 as well as a few other cars. It will use more aluminum and composites materials so the weight will go down by around 10% which will be very good for the fuel consumption of the Prius. The release date, while unknown at this time, should be some time in 2016 when the car is likely going to be launched for a base price of less than $25,000 while the more advanced model will likely set the buyer back as much as $35,000.
2017 Toyota Prius Engine
Just as we previously stated, the engine will be an all new unit. Many expect it will still be a 1.8 liter naturally aspirated inline 4 but the newest rumors suggest a 1.5 liter 3 cylinder turbocharged engine for the base model. This is going to be coupled with an electric motor and also a set of batteries. This particular model will provide around 52 MPG on average while offering similar performance to the previous version. A more complex model is also going to be available which will use a lithium ion set of batteries as well as a more efficient electric motor. This is expected to top out at 57 MPG on average, thus becoming the most fuel efficient hybrid car on the market.
The design will also change but unfortunately Toyota hasn’t said anything about it just yet. However, a model has been caught testing and the result is a lot more dramatic than we thought. It seems that the production model of the 2017 Toyota Prius will in fact resemble quite a bit the Mirai hydrogen powered car with a similar front fascia but with the usual Prius shape. This will make the car a lot more interesting than we hoped and it should allow Toyota to stay the class leader for quite a bit of time. The cabin on the other hand will most likely borrow design elements from other current Toyota model but the design of the dashboard will most likely be all new.
