Volvo took the World by surprise when they released the new XC90 which not only offered better fuel consumption than smaller crossovers but it also offered a brand new look which made it a favorite in numerous markets. Well, it now seems that Volvo wants to expand its success so they released the S90 which is actually based on the same platform as the XC90 which is a bit strange considering the crossover is the first one to be released. However, unlike the XC90, the 2017 Volvo S90 will come at a slightly higher price-tag and it should be better equipped than its crossover counterpart. On top of that, later down the road it will also receive more engine options, most of them on the European market.
Price and Release Date
Because it is based on the same platform as the XC90, the 2017 Volvo S90 sedan will come with front wheel drive as standard while an option will include an all wheel drive system with a rather nice implementation of Volvo’s torque vectoring system, meaning it should provide a lot of confidence to its driver during spirited driving. The car will likely be released in its final form at the Detroit Auto Show and it should come on the market shortly after that. The price is currently under wraps but we expect it to start at roughly $45,000 to $50,000 while in Europe it will be slightly cheaper than the crossover or the US sedan due to the fact it will also get a slightly less powerful engine.
2017 Volvo S90 Interior
The interior of the 2017 Volvo S90 is one of the best on the market and while it may not win any quality contests, it is certainly better than some Audi or BMW models. On top of that, its minimalistic design is not only functional but also very good looking and just like with the XC90, quite tech-y. On the dashboard there is a portrait-mounted touch-screen which controls the infotainment and navigation system while just bellow it there are the physical controls for the climate control system. The instrument cluster is a configurable LCD screen while on the doors there are the controls for the electric seats. The car comes as standard with these and with wood or aluminum inserts on the dashboard and doors. Also, while the leather upholstery is an option, the car will offer as standard premium cloth seats and leather wrapped door-covers in order to provide the most amount of comfort in its price-range.
The exterior design of the 2017 Volvo S90 is very similar to that of the XC90 and it is no wonder that the two are nearly identical in the front. However, the back is quite different with C-shaped tail lights and a low, sloping roof-line. This time around, a wagon is also available for the car but its name hasn’t been released just yet. This offers a similar design to some older BMW models with some unique touches that make it look a lot better than even the sedan S90.
2017 Volvo S90 Specs
Engine wise, the 2017 Volvo S90 will come on the market with three different engines. The base model will offer a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine which will provide 240 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This will only get front wheel drive. In order to get all wheel drive, the buyer will have to choose either the supercharged and turbocharged 2 liter inline 4 which provides 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque or the T8 hybrid which will become the most powerful 4 cylinder sedan in the World with its 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. All three engines will come as standard with Volvo’s 8 speed automatic gearbox while the T8 will also get an upgraded torque vectoring system as well.
