The XC90 has finally reached its second generation in the late 2014 despite it has been around for more than 13 years now. In this time it quickly became one of the most respected luxury crossovers because it offers a good starting price, great interior space as well as a lot of luxury features which is a bit unusual considering most of its competitors are a lot more expensive while offering the same type of interiors or even worse. The 2017 Volvo XC90 is going to be a slight bump of the current model which will include a whole new trim level, improved engines as well as a more luxurious interior.
2017 Volvo XC90 Review
Besides that though, the car will remain mostly unchanged which is to be expected considering it has been around for only a few months now. The 2017 model will be released close to the end of 2016 while its price will be unchanged over the current generation. However, the new top end trim level is now going to bear the Polestar name, Volvo’s high performance division. Its main competitors are going to be the Range Rover Sport Supercharged and the X5 M, two very fast and powerful crossovers. Unlike the two though, Volvo hopes to beat them with its handling rather than power which is a great approach in our opinion. 600 horsepower on a family crossover is just too much without safety equipment.
Engine wise, the 2017 Volvo XC90 will not differ all that much from the current generation meaning that the US will continue to be offered only the two petrol engines while in Europe the car will also get the great diesel offering. As standard it will come with a 2 liter supercharged and turbocharged inline 4 good for 320 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque while the old 265 horsepower engine is going to be discontinued altogether considering it wasn’t that great of a seller. The top of the range will continue to be the 407 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque hybrid which is already incredibly fast and fuel efficient. Europe will continue to get the 2 liter diesel engines good for 160 to 226 horsepower, more than enough for a long distance cruiser.
The Polestar versions will make use of the top of the range hybrid drivetrain but this time tuned for around 450 horsepower and up to 520 lb-ft of torque, enough to be faster than many sports cars out there. The major improvements though are going to come to its running gear with this special edition model receiving new shocks and springs, more rigid bushings as well as new 20 inch lightweight wheels coupled with high performance tires. On top of that, the XC90 will be lower as well as wider than the standard version in order to be able to take corners at a much higher speed.
2017 Volvo XC90 Design
Its design will not change so the XC90 will still look the same for most people. However, for those who know a thing or two about cars, the Polestar version will make a lot of sense. Firstly, a completely new body kit is going to make its way onto the car with flared wheel arches, wider wheels and slightly smaller rims than the base version in order to fit the high performance tires. On top of that, it should get active aerodynamic features such as an active grille and front air intake as well as a rear diffuser which will help with its maximum top speed which will likely be limited to around 160 MPH. The interior of the 2017 Volvo XC90 on the other hand will continue unchanged over the current model with the only difference being the addition of a few new colors for the leather upholstery.
